Quite a big project for the samurai terrain range, the new Samurai Castle Gatetower is now officially available for download!
£ This castle gatetower makes a great main entrance to a feudal-era Japanese castle layout, and I decided to paint it up in a very dark wood colour, with an eye to match the almost black wood I have planned for the big samurai castle coming next year.
£ From ground level, this is a very, very solid and imposing structure!
£ Although they sometimes painted the wood of castle buildings in a black tar-like substance, that doesn't necessarily mean that the gate itself needs to be black too. I painted this one in weathered and faded wood tones. Those square blocks at the bottom of the gateposts could be painted as wood or even stone, but I chose to paint them as black ironwork.
Since this structure is modelled to match the yagura corner tower, which was based on Kumamoto castle's real-life towers, I printed Hosokawa clan symbols for the gates, and painted them in gold. That might not be strictly accurate to real-life, but makes a great focal point.
£ The gates swing back to reveal a slope beyond, leading to a path that forks left and right.
£ Here's an aerial view of the gatetower, with some of the other castle wall sections and the corner tower. It's pretty big!!!
£ Removing the roof section shows what a large playable area you get inside the gatetower. Two doors to the building give good access for your warriors....
£ .... and you can even remove the building itself to battle your way through the gate tunnel beneath!
£ The rear of the gatetower joins up nicely with other castle wall sections, to give you some great 3-dimensional playability!
£ I strongly recommend fitting little rare-earth magnets to all castle wall sections, so layout changes can be made super fast!
You can probably tell how much fun I had posing these battle photos!
